Reiki and Energy Healing

I’m sure you know that everything is fundamentally energy vibrating at different frequencies, and that energy cannot be destroyed, only transformed.  What you might not be very aware of, is that if you don’t transform the low frequency energy in your body (like anger, fear, shame, etc.), you will transmit it, not only to your body, but also to others and to your surroundings.

Managing and healing your own energy and raising your vibration frequencies is not only important for your wellbeing, but is also a powerful way to manifest your intentions. To read more about vibrations and he power of intentions, check out this article I found online while doing some research on this subject.

Taichi, Acupuncture, Reiki, Ayurveda and Reflexology are all ancient healing practices that base their premises on healing the body’s energy. Increasingly, people are exploring alternative healing practices, either by themselves, or combined with Western medicine, as part of their personal healing protocol. I personally first learned about Reiki a few years ago, at my local yoga studio. At the time, I was petty skeptic about it, but felt curious about what it entailed.

More recently, as I explored new and holistic ways to improve my overall physiological and mental wellbeing, I decided to reconnect  and arrange a Reiki session with one of my first yoga teachers in Miami, a certified Reiki Practitioner and dear friend, Fernanda Casasbuenas. Here is a short summary of my experience with Reiki as a tool to heal my energy, and a short interview with Fernanda.

But before we continue, what is Reiki?

The International Center for Reiki Training defines Reiki as the following:

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

On our pre-Reiki session call, the night before my first healing session, Fernanda asked me to write down my intentions, or in other words, to write down what I felt needed to be healed in my body and soul. Next, she asked me to reflect on three words: Clarity, Discipline and Trust, and what they entailed in the context of aligning my life towards achieving my goals. Finally, she asked me to stop eating by 8 pm and to only drink warm water with lime juice early in the morning, prior to our Reiki session.

We met at the beach, very early in the morning at sunrise, which I loved because salt is a natural energy cleanser, the air at the beach vibrates at a higher frequency, and it is full of oxygen to breathe. After discussing what I had written the night before, we started the Reiki session:

I lay down on a shawl in the sand with my eyes closed and Fernanda placed crystals on each of my Chakras. She used Palo Santo to cleanse my aura, and using her healing hands and prayers, she began to cleanse and heal my energy. The session lasted for about 60 minutes and at the end, I felt much lighter and with better sense of clarity.

About 4 weeks after, I repeated another Reiki session with her, this time focused on a different intention, and although the session was structured similarly, on this time I felt a stronger shift in my vibrational frequency.

During this session, I felt like a blockage of energy in my heart’s chakra was being cleared. In fact, even when Fernanda was not touching my heart, I could feel a warmth and the feeling of a hand placed on my chest. At one point, the crystals that she had placed in my heart chakra jumped out of it. We both shared our astonishment after the session ended, when we discussed how I had felt.

After these two Reiki sessions, I got even more curious to learn more about this discipline, so I asked Fernanda three  questions. Here are her answers:

AlisMargot: What is the purpose of Reiki?

Fernanda: The purpose of Reiki is to open the blockages of energy of the person receiving it to improve the flow of their life force energy and inner power. When I do Reiki on someone, I connect completely with God and pray throughout the entire session presenting the intentions for that session. I offer my hands to God so that I can become His instrument of healing. Through the energy of love, I connect with the needs of the person with whom I am working and pray that I can be a channel of light and healing. I focus on connecting with each part of the person’s body with the intention of releasing and balancing the energy that may be blocked in that part. One of my prayers is as follows: “You are divine perfection and any blockage, sickness and discomfort does not belong to you. Release what does not belong to the perfection of your system, free your body, and open a space for what you really are: Love and Peace.”

AlisMargot: What attracted you to this practice in the first place and why did you decide to get trained in this discipline?

Fernanda: I have always felt a great mission to study and learn a lot in order to help people. I want to be love, and someone that feels empathy and compassion for others. I want to make all beings that I encounter with happy.

In the past, I didn’t know that my hands could get warm. One day I told my mom that I wanted to give her a massage. My hands were so hot that I took ice to cool them down because they bothered me, and the ice melted in seconds! I remember my mom telling me: “don’t do that because you can get arthritis, and massages are even better if the person giving it to you has warm hands. You have a healing power, explore that!

Also, each time I taught yoga class, during Shavasana (final relaxation pose) I would approach each person to give them a brief massage. My hands changed temperature and focused at a specific part of their body, like for instance her or his knees; I placed my hands there, started feeling the heat warming up my hands, and visualized a light of many colors. At the end of the class the person would ask me if I knew that they had an injury, or that they had had surgery in that part of their body.

AlisMargot: Do you have any advise or tip for people going through difficult situations and that are considering Reiki to help them in their healing process?

Fernanda: My advice is the following: there are many people who do this for business, and when we are vulnerable, we can be fooled easily. It is important to remember that we are a powerful energy field, so don’t let just anyone touch you. If you decide to have a Reiki session, try to identify if you feel a connection with the Reiki practitioner, and try to discern if that person’s intention comes from love, or if they just want to get your business. See how much time they dedicate to you, beyond what they could be charging you for the session, and identify if they have a genuine and authentic interest in helping you heal.

  1. So true -don’t let just anyone touch you- if this “healer” is not working on their own trauma/darkness, the energy of that is being transferred into you. The healing art comes with a tremendously responsibility to the Universe. We should never serve from a dirty, contaminated vessel – it can make the population we serve, sick. 🙏
